I've been a practicing member of the Canadian Iaido Association for 6 years now and never leave a class without both learning something new and realizing how much more there is to learn. Like an ever receding horizon stretching back over 400 years this living martial art carries the accumulation of core elements rooted in ancient combat and 23 generations of commentary and individual understanding. Iaido with the CIA is a particularly powerful practice that affect all aspects of one's life. The constant refinement of one's personal technique under the guidance of remarkably competent instructors turns into a constant refinement of oneself.
A great place to learn Iaido and Japanese culture. I trained there for a year when i still lived nearby. All the instructors and students were very friendly. I would highly recommend the place if you're looking for traditional martial arts.
I had trained in a traditional Japanese karate martial art for over 40 years. It was time for change. A time for more kime or focus at this point of my training. I had dabbled in iaido before in 1987 to 89 and decided at age 63 it was time to focus my abilities on iaido once more. I found the C.I.A. in February 2016. I have not been disappointed. Sensei Chris Tooley 6th dan and renshi, is a remarkable and very knowledgeable iaido teacher. Sensei Hewgill and Itoh Sensei bring with them decades of experience and ties to this ancient iaido art from Japan. It has indeed been a pleasure to train and to be in the presence of greatness.
I can't get over how good the instruction is. They have teachers coming over from Japan thoughout the year! If you want to learn spatial awareness, balance or a good non-contact martial art. Iai is awesome. They have licensing that is recognized by the Government of Japan! How cool is that! I also really enjoy the stories the Sensei tell who are from Japan!
I love Iaido! I've been going to Iaido with the Canadian Iaido Association since 1998!. It's hard to say why I like it so much but a big part of it is I get to use a Katana. I've been able to go to Japan and see some things I never thought I'd get to experience. I'm grateful to everyone who has helped me on this path over the years!
