I visited their truck at Manyfest's food truck wars. I was excited to try their food because their truck was one of the few that weren't doing fries (or some variation of fried potato) or incessantly cloying dessert.

I loved their concept but disliked their execution.

The concept and intentions are great: They are introducing casual African food in form of a food truck. African cuisine is gaining momentum and I am hoping that it will eventually be beloved by mainstream public too. This food truck has a "mom and pop" feel and it gives a heartwarming vibe (i am not sure if it is family owned, however).

The execution was a miss, unfortunately. Their menu at Manyfest was unsuitable with respect to time, place and location. As per their name (Simba Safari GRILL), they should've had more grill and finger food and less dishes that involve utensils and sitting down. They had skewers and African "poutine" which are eat-while-walking-friendly but they also had a rice dish, curry dish and sauteed spinach (side) dish! This is food truck wars; They should've modified their menu for the venue.

Their food was great! No shade on their food. However, the execution just wasn't on point. I purposely ordered their curry to see how they were gonna serve something liquid-y at a fest. Eating that at a crowded place was messier than you could ever imagine.

Overall, their menu was too broad. Having a broad menu results in time consuming process and larger margin of error. In order simplify the work in the kitchen, they should streamline their menu: Keep the skewers and samosas and some the "sides" (sauteed spinach. honestly, try their sauteed spinach). Those quick-bite items like skewers will lure general public to try their food - and perhaps tempt them to try more African food in the future!

Once their execution is modified and perfected, this food truck will be a gem! Right now, however, this is not a food truck - It is a casual restaurant on wheels.

Never underestimate a small food truck. The food is outstanding! I had their beef samosa and Mombasa fried spinach. One of the best samosas I ever had. If you get a chance to see their truck, buy lunch. You won't regret it.
