I recently returned from a trip of a lifetime and a bucket list hunt. I made the 1,272 mi (each way) drive to Pointe du Bois, Manitoba, Canada to Trail End Camp for a spring black bear hunt and fishing trip. By end of the first day the other guys and guides (Carter, Dave, Derek, Mike) in camp felt like old friends I had known for years, such a great group of guys.
They served us 3 scratch made meals a day. Breakfast was at 8A then we got ready and were fishing by 9A. We would return for lunch around 1230 each day, and then it was time to leave for hunting at 230P each day. Most of the treestands were around 5-20 miles from camp, which consisted of boat rides, or a combination of a truck and then boat ride or truck and ATV ride. We would hunt until the end of legal shooting hours around 930P. By the time you get back to camp dinner would be around 1030 but sometimes as late as 1230A depending of how many people tagged out that night.
The fishing was better than expected for sure. We caught a bunch of perch, which they made shore lunches for us from. We caught a bunch of Northern Pike, and accidentally caught some Walleye, which we didnt keep as they were out of season.
As far as hunting, I didnt see any bear on night one, got winded by one on night two, night three ended short due to a pop-up storm, but night 4 everything came together. I got my first bear, and coincidentally the first bear I saw from a treestand. A 6ft 7in boar that had an absolutely amazing coat. This was my first time on a guided hunt, and all expectations were exceeded and I can be a pretty person to please lol.
I hope to make it back some day. Thanks again to the whole team
Spent Saturday in the nearby campground so we could take off early on Sunday. My companions had arranged for a guided trip to a backwater lake which included 2 boat changes and a 20 minute hike to reach a lake that was inaccessible to anyone except our guide- no roads, no boat launches. You literally have to fly in here without the Lodge's resources.
It was a tough haul with a couple of engine failures but when we reached the lake the fishing was some of the best sportfishing I have ever experienced in my life. We were going for smallmouth bass and our guide Carter delivered big time. We spent the day on this smaller lake moving around and everywhere we went we nailed them.
Amongst our group we caught easily over a hundred fish, with only a couple of baby pike with the rest all smallmouth. Most of them were verging on master's. Although we caught tons of bass we only kept 3 for shore lunch and released the rest. It was one of the best days fishing I've ever had.
Carter, our guide, was incredible. He is a very hard working, easygoing, personable young guy who did everything to look after us, including paddling across one of the chain lakes on our way back when the motor failed. He expertly prepared the shore lunch and put us over fish all day. For a young guy he really dealt with all of the challenges and I never felt like he wasn't in control.
Other than some logistical issues with motors cacking out, this was a fantastic experience. I'd definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a once in a lifetime fishing experience.
Booking was easy, accommodations were clean and cozy, staff were friendly and helpful. Fishing boats were well equipped, however fishing was not very good. Went to all the way points on the provided sat GPS only caught 2 fish in 2 day. Also lots of weeds. All in all nice place.
Overall great experience. My wife and I went out for the day and it was cold in the morning (-2 on land) and windy in the afternoon. Dave, our guide was fantastic and I felt very confident in his abilities, not just in finding us fish but also in keeping us safe on the water. Shore lunch was spectacular and the fishing was great. Highly recommend this operation for anyone.
My son and I went on a three day fishing trip on Aug. 8, 2020. We stayed in Cabin 8 for two nights and he loved it. He was very entreated with the animal decor on the walls. The campgrounds were excellent and we used the canoes for fun rides and fishing. On day two we went out fishing with a guide, and all I can say is "Dave" was fantastic. We caught fish all day and on the way home my son - 7 yrs. old. pulled in a 35" pike. He said his arms were sore for two days. I better mention the fantastic shore lunch Dave prepared for us . My son is a very fussy eater but he dove into the french fries and fish like it was ice cream. The service from the rest of the camp was great as usual. I try and go to Trail End Camp at least twice a year and I will continue to do so and recommend anyone that has the opportunity to do so also. The upgrade for us not will be the fishing guide every time. Thank you Trail End Camp.
