Good & Bad. The good is that Mike is knowledgeable and has a great set-up AND the bears are there. I consider this half the equation. The other half is client experience. The bad is that multi-faceted including: guides couldn't find their way out of the woods after dark and needed to call for help from Mike. They were inexperienced in skinning and cut numerous holes in my hide. Additionally, one of our party was left in his stand for 12 hours until 3am with no communication. The following day dinner failed to be prepared because Mike was in the field helping another customer with their harvested bear and the guide in camp failed to cook. We made sandwiches and went to bed.
I emailed Mike who acknowledged the short comings, suggested changes would be made and hoped we would give him another chance. When I responded that it would be difficult to do so without some sort of financial incentive things went radio silent.
They killed a tagged and collared wolf that was a part of a long-running research project and whose several hundred km long journey was ended here. Would expect better from a 40+ year business. Some guidance and pointers for clients could go a long way.
My first guided hunt ever, didn’t know what to expect but it was a great experience. Mike went above and beyond on meals. Not Mikes best week for bear hunting due to Mother Nature but I did get a bear, met new friends but it was most memorable being with my 2 boys. I have balance issues, Mike and his guides were very accommodating in getting me in and out of the woods and especially in and out of the boats. Crow duck lake trip was remarkable, rain hampered our shore lunch but Bill back at the lodge served up a great fish fry with onion rings and french fries. Would highly recommend Whiteshell outfitters and looking forward to returning, except this time with my crossbow!
