John's Lunch

It's Sunday. I wake up to a restless dog needing to go out to pee at 6am. I take the dogs to Duncan's Cove for the first walk, I then take them to Woodside for another short walk. By this time I have worked up a good appetite. It's already 1030 as I take the dogs home and I head to John's Lunch by myself to try the fish and chips my friend was talking about the weekend prior. I walk in at shortly after 1045. They are ready, fryers on and I see these beautiful golden pieces of battered fish in a tray. They take my order. I enjoy a coffee while I wait. Then the fish and chips arrive, side of gravy, side of coleslaw. All fresh. All perfect. I dash some salt and vinegar on my plate, then I eat the BEST fish and chips I have ever eaten. I enjoy a short chat with the server, she asks me how I heard of them, I tell her about my buddy and how I read an article online that it was well reviewed. I pay, tip well and leave utterly satisfied and considering my next visit. 6/5 stars.

The location is too small for the amount of people wanting food there. Delicious food though at fairly reasonable prices. Large portions and it's a friendly atmosphere

Consistently delicious. Have been going here forever and it is never a disappointment. Always get haddock tips, they are delicious. Fish and chips is also amazing. Would recommend to anyone who likes seafood, and even those who think they don't. You may change your mind after eating here. Great staff and service.

So good! Had the shrimp and chips twice. Both times were done to perfection. Large portion sizes. Also got to try a haddock tip from my friend's plate of Haddock tips and chips. Very good. Another friend got a non-seafood option, and enjoyed it, but said it wasn't AMAZING. I think that's reasonable seeing that this is primarily a seafood place. Friendly staff. Sitting on the barstools means you're just a couple feet away from the action, giving an intimate customer-chef experience. Wonderful!

Fish is definitely good. It's the thick kind of batter. Fries are just normal. Love the vinegar based coleslaw. For me this place is not quite as big a deal as the hype around it, but still great fish and chips. Diner-style interior that looks like it hasn't changed since the 80s. Parking is a little awkward. Prices are not exactly cheap but pretty reasonable. They also have pizza and some sandwiches but I've never tried them. Let's be honest you only go out of your way to have the seafood.
