Great place to volunteer. The residents are super kind and the staff are wonderful as well!
Theresa and I had been married almost 59 years when after a few falls in our former apartment, it became obvious neither of us could safely care for each other just by ourselves, With the loving assistance of our three sons, we wound up as tenants of a fairly large double room, (together), at Shalom Village where we were welcomed and made comfortable by ALL members of the staff. There has.always a Registered Nurse on duty 24/7 with two Registered Nursing Assistants within call from our bedside. They handled our needs with care which grew to fondness in many cases as they became more familiar with our own likes and characteristics, (which included a serious infusion of coffee before EVERY meal on my part). You can imagination our surprise and pleasure when a bouquet of roses, a nice card and a lovely, (and very tasty), cake, (made in their own kitchen), was presented to us on our 59th wedding anniversary although we had become residents barely three weeks earlier.
I must say that the service by our staff is 99% attended to in unfailing good humour (although obviously sometimes pushed close to their physical and psychological limits by the complexity of their many other patients. I must observe here that many other tenants in our area are older and are much less communicative, or at other times very noisy and even, on very rare occasion, a tad combative with anyone in their immediate area, Allowance is always afforded to these persons due to their limited physical and/or mental capacities).
Now, as this is Shalom Village and therefor a Jewish owned and run institution honouring the tenants of their religion,...BUT their is absolutely NO discrimination made to ANYONE who may be Catholic, a bit of a heathen, (or maybe even a Druid), that I am aware of. My wife is a practicing Catholic and a priest from the Basilica of Christ the King shares Communion with her bi-weekly. Also, there are many, varied programs available re physical and mental fitness, entertainment of all sorts, and to my wife's delight, Scrabble is avail twice a week. (By the way, if one is given to the pleasures of a great, juicy, loaded pizza or hamburg with ALL the trimmings, (provided they are eaten in the privacy of one's own room), such repasts are NOT forbidden. I have found delivery to.Shalom Village is welcomed by local non-kosher establishments.
O.K.....This is getting lengthy and we are still only five months as residents here, so perhaps I will add more after about a year, (if I'm still available and haven't expired from complete embarrassment as the often young, nubile staff seemingly insist that I tell them whether I have had a bowell movememt EVERY gosh-darned day)!
