I've been a member of this club for the past three years, and it's been an awesome contribution to my fitness, self confidence, and ability to defend myself. I had tried a few martial arts clubs before, but never stayed past the trial period because the atmosphere was always very macho and unwelcoming, plus the moves only seemed practical if you were a 225 pound, 6'5" tall guy. It's totally the opposite here - the leader of the club, Dan, is focused on making sure everyone learns krav maga in a safe and welcoming environment. Women are fully included in the club, and Dan makes sure to teach moves that are applicable to anyone, regardless of height, weight, or strength.
That being said, it is a very challenging class, and it'll whip you into shape quicker than anything I've tried before. Each 1.5 hour class begins with a half hour cardio session and ends with a 15 minute pressure test, which is where the techniques are sped up and cumulative knowledge is put to the test. Everyone goes at their own speed, so don't worry if you're not in top shape - but be prepared for a challenge!
Being a member of this club has increased my self esteem, as I now feel much more confident in my ability to defend myself in the event of an attack. We learn how to defend against weapons (bottles, knives, bats, guns, etc), fist fights, chokes, and holds, all while standing or on the ground. All the moves are practical, unlike a lot of the junk that's advertised as krav maga on YouTube. Dan focuses on using the simplest technique that will be effective, which is essential for remembering the defences under pressure. He also emphasizes that true self defence is avoiding the fight in the first place, so this isn't a meathead MMA club like many others out there.
I highly recommend this club - challenge yourself and come check it out!
Dan is a friendly yet lethal man and I have tremendous respect for his technique. Very physical warmup and drills - and make no mistake, this is not a sport. This is survival.
I need more Krav Maga in my arsenal.
Dan and the gang at Urban Krav do a wonderful job! It is an extremely physically challenging work out and practical system. It’s a great Mixture of handwork, groundwork and in scenario-based training, that always stays fresh, and continually challenges me. Their approach to teaching is a patient, step-by-step method that is broken down in such a way that all levels of physical intelligence can succeed. I have just finished a full year of private and group lessons and my enjoyment of it continues to grow. It’s pretty addictive.
Dan is an amazing instructor, I had never done anything like this prior to starting at UKM, he made the new people feel just as comfortable as the others who had been there for a while. 5yrs later, and I’m completely addicted! Sweating, and bruises happen, and you feel great after! This class is definitely not for someone who hates sweat, it’s hard, it’s fun, but it’s practical and pretty easy to learn & remember. Dan teaches in a way where you learn the technique without katas etc. Which is great for feeling empowered even after the first class!
I encourage everyone to learn some sort of self defence, & personally find Urban Krav Maga as the most practical.
After 5yrs of learning, I feel confident walking down the road alone.
