Let's be honest. You're not going to get world class British-style fish and chips anywhere in Toronto or the GTA, so stop trying. But ... Halibut House is a good alternative. The quality is always very consistent, the batter never undercooked or overcooked, the prices are reasonable, and the portion sizes are decent without being huge. I've tried several other places but for quality and consistency Halibut House remains my favourite
Ordered the Sunday special tonight for dinner, the fish was not oily. The fries were freshly cut and nicely proportioned. Would definitely come again to try their other dishes.
Far better than i was expecting honestly. The servers were all very kind and efficient. Even on what could of been the busiest time, we got our food quite fast
As for the fish and chips themselves, the fish was battered well and very light, really nice flavors to them. The fries were fresh and salted beautifully. The portion sizes were a bit much, but nobody complains about good food.
There's never a hit or miss, it's always good. Although, I usually get the Halibut and chips. I'm pretty sure a lot of the other items are good as well. My only issue the service. The employees are polite but it could be better, the server's don't ensure to see if the food is okay or if the customer would like another drink/water refill.
Fish is great, not to dry and tastes fresh. Usually deep fried on order so it nice and hot when you bite in.
Fries are terrible though, often too soft and mushy, lacking basic flavouring of salt and pepper.
Would prefer storemade tartar sauce with more lemon juice, but that might be too much work...but the packaged tartar sauce isn't too bad, comparable to the sources other competitors in the area use.
