June, 2019: 3 Stars: I saw Dr. R for a year, and appreciate what he did for me in that time. He diagnosed me with ADHD for the first time in my life at 18, and sent me on a journey of self discovery. But I have to say that I became increasingly frustrated over the course of that year, and moved on mid-summer, 2018, to other options.
I found Dr. R incredibly hard to talk to for multiple reasons, including but not limited to his accent, and his eagerness to explain my emotions to me as I was describing them. He would interrupt me to sum up what I was saying in a very clinical way - almost as if he was just trying to connect everything to what he had read under the symptoms of depression or ADHD. I didn't feel supported by him, as I do now with my current help. Rather, I felt as if I was being told I had to make change in my life, or told there were things wrong with me that needed fixing, and then given a medication based on his interpretation of my emotional state and told "good luck," so to speak.
In my opinion and experience, of myself and other family members, you need a psychiatrist and a therapist in one, whether that is two people or one person. In the case of someone I know, her psychiatry appointments are more akin to therapy, and medication is not the subject of the whole appointment but the conclusion. In my case, I had a psychiatrist and a coach (therapist) through the same organization in Toronto, called Springboard. My psychiatry meetings were much like my meetings with Dr. R were, but not only did I feel heard, I felt as if I was being supported and told how to realistically incorporate medication into my life. And my coach has been along side me to support bumps in the road. Dr. R was just a psychiatrist. He didn't want to hear about "how things were going" for any other reason outside of prescribing a medication.
All-in-all, Dr. R is much better than nothing. At least through him, you would have access to medications for severe disorders, among other advantages. But if you have other options, I'd consider them.
May, 2018 - 5 Stars: Dr. R is a excellent child psychiatrist. He helped me get diagnosed with ADHD and get medicated for depression. Note: they don't answer their phone. If you need to get in touch with them, email them.
Dr Raj has been helping my family since i was a child. He got treatment for my brother and I for separate issues as children. I recently found out that he was still practicing, so i brought my son there for an assessment. I am now bringing my other child there too. He keeps his knowledge up to date and is thorough when accessing the person for diagnosis. He uses visuals to explain how your brain works and how he can help.
