It’s kind of hard to wrap your head around this casual, small, unassuming, almost “hole-in-the-wall” type sushi spot. It’s always busy, there are only a handful of tables and seating along the sushi bar - the decor, atmosphere and drink menu is just as sparse and causal as any other neighbourhood sushi spot, and people roll in wearing old jeans and T-shirts - nothing fancy. Yet, at $500+ for dinner for two people (just for the food - no drinks) Sushi Kaji is easily one of the top 20 most expensive restaurants in North America. If you add a bottle of wine - there are two choices of red and two choices of white - bottles only, not by the glass - or if you add a side of steak to your meal (for an additional $85) it wouldn’t be at all hard to spend over $800 for dinner for two people. Is the food delicious? Yes it is absolutely delicious, no one could say it’s not great food - and the prefix menu does include lots of food - it just keeps coming. It’s definitely the best sushi and sashimi I’ve ever had - inventive, beautifully presented, excellent quality, really very tasty. BUT is the dining experience really worth the one-of-the-most-expensive-restaurants-in-North-America price tag? I just don’t think so.
Fantastic experience. Pricey but worth it. Sushi was the best ever due to the quality of the fish.
Amazing high quality food. My husband and I went to this place for the first time for our anniversary. When I first saw the menu and noticed that the difference between the pricing among three different courses was the main entree, I assumed that the main entree was the last meal you get before the dessert. Up to the point where we had our entree, the food was good but not spectacular/definitely meals that I've had before and not really unique but beautifully plated. When we were having the entree finally we thought.. ok it's decent but not worth the price. However, entree WASN'T the end. After that we had rows of sushi coming to our table until I was so full that I couldn't eat anymore.. lol! You get so much good food and high quality sushi from all over the world until you are FULL. Not that many fancy restaurants out there can make you full with the same amount of money you pay here at Kaji. Will definitely come back on special days.
This place is pretty awesome. I have been going here for years and over that time, I have had various experiences here. The first time, I was completely blown away by the quality of the sushi. This was over 15 years ago and at the time, the omakase was fairly reasonably priced. Over the years, it has gone up in price and I would say the competition in Toronto has also caught up. Having said that, it is still really good and worth checking out if you are a sushi fan.
