My sister and I took a group intro lesson at My Fencing Club. We had a lot of fun while learning the new sport. The coaches were very professional, engaging, dedicated and happy to help. The owner is full of passion for people, her students, their parents, and those working for her. I would highly recommend going here to learn fencing whether for competitive sport or for recreational fun."
My son has been fencing with Katya for over two years and the experience for him has been transformative. He's confident, fit, and enamoured by the physical and mental aspects of the sport.
I think too many kids in sports learn not to trust praise from adults because of all the cajoling we do. Unlike most athletic coaches for young people we have worked with, Katya never lies to kids (or parents), which means when she gives compliments, and she does often, her praise genuinely means something. She is deeply compassionate, and aware of the complicated lives and big feelings young people have, and intuitive about what they need from her as a coach and as a person at a given moment. She encourages independence and personal accountability.
The beginner's track is lots of fun. She runs in-club tournaments for beginners several times a year, building confidence and letting students practice their newly acquired skills.
She gives students on the competitive track a class with a fitness trainer, work on mindfulness, nutrition, and lots of team-building work. The spirit in the club is exhuberant, playful, and cooperative.
I highly recommend the club, but not to parents who want to baby their children forever or push them too fast or too far.
I booked an intro lesson for me and my husband as a fun way to celebrate our wedding anniversary (nothing says "I love you" quite as well as poking each other with plastic weapons). We had such an incredible time learning about the sport, doing drills, and actually fencing each other. Our instructor, Will, was knowledgeable and personable, and he made the entire experience quite memorable. Highly recommend!
I booked a two-person introductory lesson as a surprise birthday present for my partner. We're both in our early thirties and had never fenced before. I expected it to be a fun, silly, one-time experience. Turns out, I was the one who was surprised; not only did we have a fabulous time, but we left certain that we would be fencing again in the future.
Our lesson was held in a lovely, welcoming space on St. Clair West. Our instructor Katya, who founded and runs My Fencing Club, was funny, gracious, engaging and extremely knowledgeable, not only about fencing but also teaching. Her intuitive, straightforward and playful teaching style helped us, as utter beginners, to understand and enjoy the physically and mentally challenging sport. What fun!
My fencing club is the best sport organization that I have ever visited. The atmosphere there is absolutely kind and friendly. All members of this club are very good and kind people. Moreover, the teachers in the club are very good, professional and experienced. They do their best to help their students to achieve high-level rank in their professionalism in fencing, and help them absolutely in everything.
