The udon noodles are made in house and taste a cut above the frozen ones you purchase on the Asian superstores. The texture is slightly springier and more elastic, and it soaks up flavor well in soups and sauces.
That being said, I ordered the Kami Nanban udon (savory broth with duck cutlets) and the pork Katsu Curry udon. Both dishes were well-balanced and flavorful, and it demonstrated the versatility of the noodle to shine in two different styles of preparation. Between the two, I prefer the broth version as it's cleaner in taste and less filling, but the curry would be a great choice if you are hungry.
The prices on Zen's menu are certainly on the higher end for udon dishes in the city, but I still definitely recommend the experience. Should you decide to prepare dishes with their noodles yourselves, they do sell udon noodles in single portions for $3, and it comes with a helpful paper guide to ensure you cook it adequately. I did buy two bundles of udon, and they tasted amazing.
Incredible and consistent quality!
Zen has always delivered exceptional food during every dining experience I have had.
During the pandemic, they have taken lots of care in packaging their takeout items to ensure that they are fresh. They also include very handy instructions on how to reheat your meal! Currently they have a seasonal Sakura ebi kakiage udon that is truly delectable. Highly recommend zen sanuki udon for a satisfying meal!
A gem in Scarborough and possibly my favourite and most consistent go-to restaurant. High quality Japanese udon and food. Takeout still as good as dine in (they provide instructions on how to eat it at home). Ordering on their website gets you 10% off pick up after a minimum spend.
The attention to detail!
I was impressed by the service, warm reception. To top it off the food was perfect in every conceivable way. This place deserves more traffic.
This place have hands down the most authentic and best udon in the GTA. The noodle is made fresh on site. The service is great, the portions are generous. We ordered take out and everything was packed perfectly. They thoughtfully packed most ingredients separately and you can assemble at home without things getting soggy. The cold udon was perfectly al dente just like it should be. Everything was tasty and you can tell the ingredients are high quality. We’re so happy that there’s finally an authentic udon place that we can visit regularly.
