What to rate a Tim Hortons?

Do you rate it compared to all the other culinary experiences this vast world has to offer? That doesn't seem right. After all, one does not patronize a Tim Hortons for grand cuisine. You go for the price point, and the convenience. Easy yums. Simple, delicious, guilty flavor. This would lead me to rate "Timmy's," as I've discovered the locals call it, as it compares to other convenient fast food chains commonly found along the highways and byways of North America.

But! Not all chains do the same thing. Some do breakfast, like Tim Hortons and Dunkn. Some do "Mexican." Some do Americana burgers and fries. Some do "deli." So perhaps it depends on your mood.

Let us not forget regionality too. Dunkn perhaps carries some intangible pleasure when consumed in Boston, while Timmy's owns the great white North. A tourist may prefer to taste the local flavor, while locals may gravitate out of home town pride. Alas, context again befuddles me.

Again I ask our all knowing multicolored, multinational, internet god, what to rate a Tim Hortons?

Well, we can't rate it against all restaurants we can't rate it against other fast food chains. Perhaps we judge based on other Tim Hortons experiences of the past.

I've had Tim Hortons on three other occasions. Once, hungover at a location near my friend's home on my first full day in Montreal. I had Donuts. Clearly, I cannot rely on memory to render this experience truthfully, through the sticky sweet sensations of nostalgia, relief from alcohol related dehydration and hunger and the pure, child-like joy of jelly filling.

My second visit too, had mitigating factors. It was upon my triumphant return to Montreal three months later. After a long journey, I had met my brother and his girlfriend. The joy of reconnecting, the long road behind, the anticipation of imminent arrival. How does one convey such things in a review? I leave it to the poets, to the artists. It is beyond me and therefore quite beyond the scope of this review. My third visit was in the Montreal underground on the way to an event and it was fine.

Every experiences are each so unique, so dependent on circumstance, on my mood, my company, my occasion to eat Tom Hortons. In each of these occasions the chain has dutifully fulfilled it's stated obligations, to deliver fast, life shortening, artery-clogging, but delicious in a transgressive "I know I shouldn't but I will" sort of way, food to my mouth in exchange for the locally tendered currency. It is a deal with Satan, but I make it with eyes wide open. I know what I am getting into. That is the problem.

And so I ask again, what to rate a Tim Hortons? I

But, perhaps we should expect more. Can we expect more? Maybe we assess the quality of a Tim Horton's by the social destruction it causes and its wake. By the overworked underpaid workers. By the skyrocketing obesity rates.by the socio-economic pressures that blind people to the health costs of over-consuming fast food or worse, force them to over-consume fast food. The corrupt, twisted, capitalist incentives that keep junk food cheap and healthy food expensive.

None of this is Tim Hortons fault of course. And even if it were, my negative review would not hold them to account. More likely, my online ire would punish the workers, the nice lady who took my order with a smile and a kind word, even when I changed it to a combo after she'd already rung it up, forcing her to cancel the order and re-enter it, in the middle of a late morning rush.

And so, here I think we've found what to rate Tim Hortons, and indeed every part of the human condition. That condition is of course, loneliness. We are, so alone. So trapped in our contextual reality, our limited perspective and experience. But once in a great while, there is connection. Once in a while we touch one another. A glance, a smile, a long talk with a sympathetic confidant. Once in a great while we are seen. It can happen anywhere, even in a Tim Hortons.

The answer always was, the friends we made along the way. Thank TH lady. Thank you.
