Ruth Johnson Park

Ruth Johnson was a cool person and so is her park. Big and new. Super steep slides. Ziplines with chairs. Amazing. Trails that lead right to the beach.

Ruth Johnson park is the largest park in White Rock. The Duprez ravine runs thru the park from 16th Ave all the way down the hill to Duprez St which ends at Marine Drive, across from Bayview Park on Semiahmoo Bay. Ruth Johnson Park has a hiking trail along side the stream in the ravine as well as along the ridge line above the ravine which ends at Seymour Ave.
There are several park benches located there which provide wonderful views of Semiahmoo Bay and the islands. You can start the trail at 16th Ave and descend all the way to Marine Drive where it ends at Semiahmoo Bay. Or you can enter the hiking trail via wooden steps on either side of the ravine. The park and the ravine are secluded and lead from the adjacent Centennial Park and Centennial Arena down to the water. You can often hear and see woodpeckers and on occasion an owl.

A local resident, Roger Currie, tells us that when Fred Johnson's (an early resident of what is now White Rock, circa 1882) wife passed away in 1954 he sold 27 acres to the city of Surrey for a nominal fee. Part of that deal was the land would be used for a park, and it would carry and honour his wife’s name, Ruth Johnson Park. The city of Surrey gave the park over to White Rock in 1957 and in 1967 the park was named The Centennial Park (it was Canada's Centennial Year) But, now it is rightfully named The Ruth Johnson Park largely due to Roger Currie reminding White Rock of the origin of the park. Centennial Park is much smaller but it still exists and is adjacent to The Ruth Johnson Park. Go and enjoy!

p.s. Pay parking is available at the Centennial Arena or on 16th Ave. , but if you drive around the corner onto High Street beside the lawn bowling facility or still a little further down on High street you can park for free on the shoulder of that street. There are entrances to the trail from High Street.

Ruth Johnson Park is a heavily wooded park, with pathways, trails, ravines, bridges, with some steep hills. At the bottom of the park there are nice views of Boundary Bay & Semiahmoo Bay, thru the trees. There is a large elevation change between this parks views and White Rock Promenade, along the water. Park hours remain unchanged, dawn to dusk, approximately 7:00 am to 10:00 pm depending on the time of year. Thanks for this ......

Great walk. Lots of stairs but there are also other trails with less. Can spends a few hours or just do a short walk, less than an hour.

It's a nice little park in White Rock. I was definitely annoyed to see that they charge for parking. It doesn't seem like they are charging much. We were there on a weekday evening and it was charging a buck an hour. Despite this it was a nice little stroll.
