Before I took a job as a Teaching Assistant at SFU, I was making $80/day as a public school teacher in Mississippi, where labor unions are legally barred from striking and collective bargaining. When I arrived here, the benefits that workers before me had fought for - from healthcare and childcare coverage, to workload reviews and protection from discrimination - were immediately applied to me. Since then, whether pushing for improvements to the workplace or just defending what we've won, the people who work with TSSU have impressed me by responding directly to whatever concerns members have, and working for collective solutions. The feminist, non-hierarchical commitments of AUCE, the provincial union that TSSU comes from, are alive and well in this union.
You may not agree with unions but sometimes they have their place. This one is about supporting the teaching assistants who are key to some of the bigger classes being delivered.
