Purcell's Ground Cemetery

Address: Goodwood, NS B3R, Canada

Cemetery

“This is the largest and most exciting cemetery to find in Long Lake Provincial Park. You must find it by taking the Old St. Margaret’s Bay Road in Long Lake Provincial Park. The easiest way is to come in from Goodwood, (GPS coordinates N 44° 36.159 W 063° 40.424) but you can also start in on old Old Sambro Road side (GPS coordinates N 44° 36.532 W 063° 37.700). Once on this road, you must keep your eyes open for a trail leading to the north. This side trail is called the Old Post Road and can be found at the following coordinates: N 44° 36.416 W 063° 39.724. Along the Old Post Road, you will find the Purcell's Ground Cemetery located off the road. Keep walking until you see pink trail tapes leading into the woods to the left (west). It takes a ten minute bushwhack to get to this cemetery, which seems like it is buried in the woods away from everything, but there must have been more near here at the time. Follow the pink trail tapes that can lead you in, and the cemetery itself is at the following coordinates: N 44° 36.577 W 063° 38.934. There are eleven headstones in this fenced in cemetery. According to local historian Iris Shea the land around the cemetery originated with the Toler family. Peter Toler purchased a small piece of property from John Wagner, son of Thomas and established a working farm there around 1814, following his marriage to Jane Umlah a sister to John Wagner's wife. All of those buried at this site are descendants of Peter Toler. His only daughter Isabella is mother or grandmother to the people buried here.”

Old Marriott Cemetery

Address: Goodwood, NS B3R, Canada

Cemetery

“The Marriott Cemetery is an exciting discovery along the Old Coach Road, or what I like to call the Umlah estate road, because the remains of the old Umlah family estate was located along this road. The cemetery is marked by a sign on the trail, or the exact GPS coordinates for the cemetery are: N 44° 36.336 W 063° 39.828 The cemetery is located southeast of the Old St. Margaret’s Bay Road. There are two headstones here: one Rufus Marriott, d. May 13, 1904 age 21 years – son of Alexander and Mary; the other, Florence V. Marriott d. April 18, 1909 age 19 months, daughter of James and Lillian. The Cemetery is considerably overgrown.”

John Umlah Cemetery

Address: Goodwood, NS B3R 1R4, Canada

Cemetery

“This is another one of the more exciting discoveries in this area of the Long Lake Provincial Park. It is on a trail that used to be the Old St. Margaret's Bay Road. As you go along the Old St. Margarets Bay Road in the Long Lake Provincial Park, you will find a road to the north. Along this road you will find the final resting place of John Umlah b. June 20,1829, d. February 19, 1893. John Umlah lived and farmed in the area for many years. A significant portion of what is now Long Lake Provincial Park was expropriated from his heirs in 1953-54. The exact coordinates for the John Umlah tombstone are: N 44° 36.725 W 063° 39.332”
