We had a great lunch at the Mateus Bistro in Mahone Bay! Our server, Erin, was fantastic. She was friendly, nice and provided us great service. The food was excellent! Everything was delicious. I highly recommend this place!
This was one of the best meals we have ever had. Every bite was incredible, from the huge charcuterie appetizer to the perfectly baked fish, to the insanely delcious beef tenderloin, and all the sides. The wine was lovely, and the creme brulee was sinful. Incredible service and fair prices topped off an amazing evening. We can't wait to go back!
My wife and I had a lovely dinner here. The staff was extremely friendly and even though we didn't have a reservation while the restaurant was busy they were able to accommodate us. The food was fantastic! I highly recommend having a visit if you're ever in the area!
It's okay is right. The food tastes good, but the portion sizes are jokingly small. A $16 order of dumplings includes 3 single bite dumplings. You might be able to take two bites per dumpling if you like very small bites of food. The dumplings were tasty, but would have been better if they were crispy on one side and steamed on the others. They were just steamed all over, so no real textural excitement. The crispy rice noodles make up for it a bit, but crispy dumplings that are fried on one side are better. A $16 order of dumplings needs 6 dumplings to be an alright deal, but 3 is just a joke. I figured ordering a plate of beef bourguignon would be a safe bet, as the best braised meats are made from the cheapest cuts of beef, so surely for $31.50 in Mahone Bay, the portion size will be reasonable, right? Not so much. The entire portion had possibly 4 ounces of braised beef, and a very small portion of risotto with maybe 4 carrot chunks. The bourguignon was tasty, but not amazing or even close to the best I've had. If you're going to charge such a high price for beef stew, and serve such a tiny portion, it needs to be amazing IMO. There was one other table of middle aged diners, and everyone else I would have guessed was 65 or 70+. If you like senior sized portions of food, but being charged high prices, then head on over. The portions were so small that after spending $105 with tip, we had to go somewhere else for another dinner. I used to love Circa 1860 down the road for their amazing food, and great portion sizes, so since they closed I had high hopes for Mateus when I heard about it, but it doesn't meet expectations, sadly.
The food was excellent. The ambience was perfect: the overhead canopy illuminated by strings of lights, the decorations all worked together to create a casual yet intimate setting. The live band was really good. They even accommodated me by letting me transform a bourbon old fashioned into a brandy old fashioned sweet which was delicious.
