Beautiful spot for pictures and the opinion resort is a great place for ice cream or dinner and drinks
Another gorgeous Lock. This Lock and the area are simply beautiful. This is more commercialized here. There is a restaurant which serves good food. However, wait times for food to arrive can be quite long. There are also little cottages for rent (also rooms I believe). This can be busy with tourists but it is worth the drive. Beautiful scenery, nice staff who work the Lock. The staff in the restaurant are very nice also.
William Fleming was the first lock master here and he is my 4 greats grandfather! So besides being a beautiful place to stop for a picnic lunch it is a place close to my heart!
I had an opportunity recently to hop on the motorbike and explore another Rideau Canal lock station. Once again I headed south-west from Ottawa towards the town of Elgin, Ontario so that I could check out Chaffeys Lock. The Chaffeys Lock area appears to be quite a tourist and country cottage area, and when I arrived there around noon there were a lot of cyclists and cars—certainly more of those than boats going through the canal. If it hadn’t been for the COVID pandemic, I doubt that it would have bothered me that much, but there were too many people without masks and not maintaining any kind of physical distancing. So, I walked around, kept my distance, took some photos and generally checked the place out. I imagine it is quite beautiful and quiet here in the fall—maybe an opportunity for another visit. One neat thing about Chaffeys Lock is that it is on the Opinicon Road. From highway #15 to Chaffeys Lock it was a great motorbike ride, and I can only imagine how great a ride it would be to take that road on the motorbike to highway #10 at Raymonds Corner.
Beautiful place to watch boats and have a picnic. Nice and clean. Shady places with picnic tables
