Rideau Canal, Lock 38 - Davis

Beautiful fall colour your.

Gorgeous spot. It is a well hidden, small lock. However, the drive in is spectacular! You can see some wildlife (we saw a fawn). It is a very narrow road so people should drive carefully and slowly as the wildlife just come out of nowhere. Although on is own, there are sprinkling of cottages everywhere. Well worth the drive! Everyone should be careful of the wildlife there.

It is beautiful and picturesque and it has an old building from the beginning of the canal - staff were very friendly and informative.

The Davis Lock is billed as the most isolated lock on the Rideau Canal. “Isolated” is an understatement! You pick up the Davis Lock Road at highway #15 at Elgin, Ontario. The Davis Lock Road is a narrow and very winding 9 km ride with a lot of blind turns. There are few homes along the road, so it is kinda deserted. And the road ends at the lock. When I arrived at the lock, there were two cars in the parking lot and they belonged to the people managing the lock. Other people who were there were from the boats going thru the canal. It dawned on me that the only people who would drive to the lock would be curious people like me and the people who work there. It was a bucolic site with some great scenic views and definitely worth the ride in on the motorbike.

This is probably the most isolated lock in the Rideau system. Yesterday's visit was very pleasant. Only a few boats were tied up and nobody locked through for over half an hour. The blockhouse is renovated as accommodation and available as a rental. Opportunity like this is rare. This is a spot where you can step back in time to the early 1800's. Soak in the history.
