This amazingly talented artist creates gorgeous hand-dyed, hand-woven scarves and tapestries.
Marni has a walkout basement studio with big windows on three sides that let sunlight in all day as the studio is south facing. Her loom is comfortably set in the south east corner which overlooks the rest. The walls are covered with gorgeous tapestries with varying degrees of complexity, color, and style. It's hard not to see one that you couldn't fall in love with.
The day I visited she was working on a very detailed tapestry that she was creating from a photo taken in Algonquin Park. It was a stream with rocks and shrubbery and flowers that she was duplicating with fibers with occasional rough sort of lumps giving it a three dimensional feeling.
But I was there for a scarf and there must have been a couple of dozen of them to choose from. It was the second one I was buying and she remembered and suggested just the right one that could go with an outside coat or with a sweater indoors.
Given the amount of time it takes her to create something the prices she charges seen quite reasonably. She told me that a large tapestry is measured in months of work.
It's a treasure to behold.
We visited Marni's beautiful studio during the Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour. Marni and her family were very welcoming and a pleasure to chat with. Marni's work is stunning — you should see it in person to truly appreciate it.
Marni is talented and such a pleasure to work with.
