I have always had the perch dinner and love it. Decided to try pickerel this time. Still good but not at the perch level.
Always go for the dinner. Stick to fish and avoid steak. Celery bread is outstanding and try every salad. Not sure why they put whole green onions on the pickle plate. Who eats that?
The locals rave about the celery bread, which is good, but I have only had one other restaurant cheeseburger as good as this one in this part of Ontario and those fries! You can tell when a kitchen loves their craft. My parents enjoyed their local catch of fish and chips.
And a shout out to the young parking attendant fella who recommended the place and waived the parking fee when the went over the hour since we were first-time visitors to Port Dover.
We've dined here many times on many different occasions over the years but this time was just a meh for me. I called to make reservations (for my parents 66th wedding anniversary) and was told I couldn't get the time requested but rather a half hour either side, fine. Upon arrival we were put in the back room, (no view, wooden chairs), instead of the front room, (window, comfy chairs), neither was at capacity leaving me wondering why they couldn't accommodate time originally requested and why our party of 6 was relegated to the back room. As my mother uses a walker and was already seated, I did not request a table change. The wait staff were lovely people, the tables looked nice.
Table salads and celery bread were fairly tasty (salad plate size could've been a little larger, was really only adequate for celery bread. 3 of us had perch, 2 of us scallops and 1 shrimp, which everyone said they enjoyed. I found the side dishes/veggies were a little lack lustre, left me wishing I'd order the larger plate with combo options, skipping the sides as I enjoyed the salads more (and perhaps taken home a doggy bag). No one ordered dessert.
They really should consider putting in an outdoor ramp by the front (staircase) entrance, (for accessibility), instead of (dining) guests having to walk in areas directly in front of quest rooms. Thankfully they were non smoking but being a lovely weather evening, many hotel quests were seated outside their rooms trying to enjoy their view. I felt uncomfortable walking in front of them, they were reach out and touch me close.
Excellent!! We love the Cove Room at the Erie Beach Hotel. The food is consistent...and I've been going there for many years. The Perch and Pickerel were melt in your mouth good. Our friend had the steak and she said it was excellent. And the salad cart never disappoints. So yummy!
So much salad, and so good. The Erie Beach Hotel is an institution. The salad cart, celery bread and fresh perch and pickerel make it a unique meal worth experiencing!
