50min from calgary. Wide trails and easy to walk up. I recommend for the whole family. 3 to 4 hours up and down
This is a spectacular hike, one of my favorites this summer. It's not very challenging, it has lots of flats and some uphills. The views of the lake are breathtaking when you're walking by it, once you get to the top of Yates Mountain, it's extremely beautiful. The fresh air is very nice. The woods are also very nice.
Amazing hike. It’s not extremely hard, I would say moderate. It gets harder closer to the end because you literally have to climb the rocks, hiking shoes will help a lot and trekking poles as well. Even my little corgi managed to climb all the way up, I’m sure you can as well ☺️ the views on Barrier Lake are amazing 😍
Came here on a weekday afternoon around 3:45PM, quite a few cars parked along the street and in the parking lot, didn't see anyone though on the trail aside from two bikers and four hikers when I was coming down. Trail starts by the lake, quite pretty, then goes into the trees for a while. Not too steep of a hike, lots of switchbacks but relatively flat ones until the top which was a bit steep at the very top, not too bad though as that section was short. Good signage - basically a map at every intersection which I appreciated. View at the top was amazing, especially with larches down below - could see the lake and mountains in the distance, really pretty! Took about 1 hour 20 minutes to get to the top, definitely worth it!
When you summit Yates mountain you have great views of the Rockies and the Prairies. It’s worth the hike! The trail to the peak from Prairie View Lookout Trail is not maintained but it is a pretty easy hike if you are comfortable with steeper inclines. The views are worth the hike. You won’t be disappointed. Plus there is a cool fore watch station at the top with some picnic tables for the public to use.
