Lodging

“My wife and I, and our 14-month old, just stayed in cottage 10 with my parents for a week. My parents rented the cottage. The cottage is well-equipped with cooking utensils, dishes, extra blankets, etc, so you won't need to bring anything like that. It was clean when we arrived, with the exception of the barbecue, which was filthy. It looked like the last person to use it coated the entire grill with barbecue sauce and just left it like that. Paddle boats and canoes are available. We brought our own life jackets, but I believe they have some available as well. We thought about taking a fishing boat out, but $90 was too steep for what would end up as a couple of hours of use. The beach is nice, and there were lots of sand toys for our toddler. There were mice in the kitchen/dining area. We lost a bit of food one night before we sealed everything up, and one evening while playing a game we were visited by a mouse running out from under the oven to the storage room, then back again a few minutes later. We tried to plug up the gaps but still found droppings on the table and counter each morning. There is a fairly long and steep incline between the waterfront and cottage 10. If you have any issues with your knees or legs you will definitely want to visit and make sure you can handle it before booking. Finally, be aware that you may not have the traditional freedom that you would expect when renting a property. We had to relocate our nieces' birthday party with one day's notice (and no cell service with Rogers) when the family that owns the Lodge decided they "weren't comfortable" with the gathering taking place. I just double-checked their website and there is no mention that you aren't allowed visitors. There was also no mention of that restriction on the contract that my mother signed for the cottage. While we didn't tell them ahead of time exactly how many people were coming to the birthday party, the woman who negotiated the rental with my mom was aware of the party, and should have asked questions if she had any concerns. Instead, after we had arrived and unpacked, she got the details of the party from my mom, discussed it with her in-laws (the owners of the Lodge, though she apparently owns that particular cottage) and they decided we couldn't have it. They then insisted the whole thing was our fault for not telling them ahead of time. They sort-of tried using COVID as the reason, but again that should have been made clear before the contract was signed. Their handling of the situation was very unprofessional, and we will not be returning or recommending this place. That being said, if you decide to rent a cottage here, make sure you get everything in writing, including things you would expect from a normal cottage rental like having visitors during the day. And make sure that "the in-laws" have agreed to everything. Management of cottage 10 at least is more like paying a kid to stay in their room than actually renting a property - you have to be aware of the parents' rules.”
