Grew up on Perfect Chinese food in Scarborough since I was a kid and it naturally became my go-to for all things Chinese in the hood. But, recently visited Top Choice and this is now our MUST GO-TO SPOT. The flavors and freshness of all the dishes are what really set it apart from Perfect and several other restaurants I've been too. Sure the decor, ambiance, and service could be better but we're not coming here for a fine dining experience. The food is the star here. And, you know it's a good restaurant when no one speaks a lick of English and it's always packed.
Food is pretty tasy, especially the Sweet and Sour Pork - Crispy, Saucy, but not overly sweet or tough. Portions are good, quality is good. Prices a little higher, but include a free appetizer soup and bean dessert. Service is typical of chinese restaurants, bad, but expected. Most staff speak limited English.
Enjoyed a good Cantonese dining experience when I visited on a Saturday in November 2018 for dinner.
Had the soup, a bunch of dishes, the red bean dessert and, of course, tea. What really impressed me was that, although the restaurant was at capacity (you know you made a good dining choice), the dishes came out fairly quickly and were still prepared with skill using good quality ingredients. The cooks have got to be on top of their game in a well run kitchen to pull that off. And the portion size definitely encourages large groups to attend and enjoy sharing.
Service was not a problem at all, everyone fulfilled their duties. The parking in the plaza lot was busy given the number of restaurants that share it. The decor inside is not really current. And all that is okay because the food is why this place really is a Top Choice.
Standard Chinese restaurant. It was pretty busy for a Monday and full of Chinese people (good signs).
The dishes are a little small for the price, but overall flavours were above average.
The bitter melon with beef was flavourful and there was enough wok hay (Chinese term for flavour from the wok it is cooked in).
Rest of the dishes were as expected.
You won't be blown away but it is satisfying.
They also provide complimentary soup and tofu dessert.
Total bill, including three white rice bowls (that are massive), $88.
