Amethyst Mine Panorama

Pick Your Own Amethyst - Although an active Mine you really just go through the Fragments that have already been mined and Pick your Own Amethyst. Lots of good pieces to be found. There's plenty of amethyst around and interesting specimens exist if you take your time. We came on a day where new Mined fragments were just placed, so your mileage may vary. $10 seems a little steep for the "Tour" but we had "free coupons" offered by the Thunder Bay Tourist Centre.

We didn't know we could mine for amethyst. We drove by and saw the sign and decided as a family to stop here and give it a try. We didn't know what to expect and we were pleasantly surprised. We were traveling with our (100+ lb) dog and loved the fact that this place was pet friendly. We went on an overcast day so it was ok for our dog to be with us, if you go on a sunny day there isn't much shade so make sure to bring a water bowl, water is available because you need it to wash the amethyst off after mining. I would recommend good footwear and a small chair so you save your knees for serious digging. Overall we enjoyed our time here...even our 16 year old son got in on the action! We spent about two hours here and that was enough time for us. Definitely worth the stop and the staff were super friendly too!

Friendly owners and nice site. "Tour" was a bit lacking though... but we were able to chat with them on own after and ask a few questions which was cool.

Being able to pick out your own stones is a nice experience and the pricing is decent. Great experience with kids as well

The place is run by the owners. They were very nice and gave us a warm welcome. They provide a short guided tour and explanations and after the kids went to look for the Amethyst (which is all over the place).

Going to Amethyst Mine Panorama has quickly become one of my favourite memories. The history was fascinating, the science is fascinating, and all explained to us by the wonderful owners. The owners of this family run business are lovely and are obviously passionate about the legacy of the mine. We came away with some awesome amethyst finds and the experience made them all the more precious.
