I joined the Black Belt Institute(BBI) in the mid 90’s, a single 30something woman in TO, thinking some self-defence skills would be useful, and looking for a new fitness challenge. Maybe not a typical student? After a few sessions I was hooked. The atmosphere established by the instructors (most often Alex Atkinson for my practices, with others, including a young Brent taking the lead from time to time) was welcoming, respectful and fun. It goes without saying that martial arts develops incredible all-round fitness - strength, stamina, flexibility, mental acuity. I was in the best physical shape of my life when I was training. Unexpectedly I also gained from the BBI perseverance, self-control, confidence, respect for others and patience. Also, great friendships!
Thrilled to recognize instructors’ names on the fb page - the collective expertise is impressive.
If you’re wondering if you or your child should join BBI - take that first step and check it out.
Wishing BBI all the best in the new facility!
Both Brent and Alex Atkinson have. wealth of martial arts knowledge and experience. More importantly they have worked extensively with kids right all the way to seniors. They are amazing teachers!
I have been a student of Brent as part of the the Black Belt Institute, as have my two boys. I say without reservation that Brent us the most talented Karate instructor I have ever encountered. Personally and professionally, he is an phenomenal athlete with a rare talent to teach well. So well, in fact, that my two boys remained engaged and enthralled all the way to double black belts. Any parent will know how uncommon that is. And that is just the start. Brent is confident without ego, and selfless with his time and attention. Count yourself lucky to have Brent as an instructor.
Black Belt Institute instructors are the best of the best. I began my black belt journey reluctantly as an adult in my late forty’s… fast forward 12 years later, I can honestly say, I’ve improved my fitness and able to deal with many stressful situations.
Sensei Alex and Brent genuinely care about each student’s individual’s needs and goals. A welcoming environment for everyone!

I began studying martial arts with Alex Atkinson at the Black Belt Institute 30 years ago and continue to this day. Alex is the best martial arts teacher I've every had and probably the best teacher of any topic. It's fabulous to see Brent continue in his footsteps in a new location and bring the iconic Black Belt Institute experience to another generation. I wholeheartedly recommend them!
