One of my favorite places in the San Juans. We picked up a mooring ball in Shallow Bay with our sailboat and stayed for the night. We hiked on the island, which had clean primitive toilets, fire pits, and picnic tables. The anchorage was well protected and full of sea otters and rare water fowl. If you're looking for places to visit in this area, Sucia is a solid choice.
Great place to explore several islands, coves, trails, vistas, fascinating rock formations and beaches. Such a variety of terrain and interesting places to visit. Probably the largest island state park in San Juan islands.
Amazing state park only reached via boat. We had such a great time camping on island while my BF’s parents slept on their sailboat!
Fossil Bay on Sucia is a wonderful place to pick up a mooring ball. Short dinghy ride to a solid dock lets you explore the island on foot. Beautiful sunsets, fun to watch the bald eagles and otters. The mooring balls can be hard to come by in the summer - arrive early if you want one. Many boats in Shallow Bay and Echo Bay also. Even with all balls taken in Fossil Bay, it was a quiet evening.
Sucia island is why you live in (or visit) Washington state. It showcases some of the best trails, sunsets, wildlife viewing and of course sailing there is! Ample campsites on land and plenty of options to tuck you boat in at one of many bays.
