harder at first. quite a hard hike
Good trailhead. Minimal parking and no bathrooms. But nice and quiet usually.
The Barnaby Lakes / Southfork Lakes trail is popular with fisherman looking for Golden Trout, and is a great destination in early fall to see the larch turn gold before losing their needles.
Southfork Lakes and back is about 10 km, and a 690 m ascent. The trail is maintained and fairly well marked with signs and orange markers.
The trail requires crossing the Castle River near the start (and end) of this out-and-back trail. The river can be high during Spring run-off and following heavy rains.
The trail starts off fairly level through the forest, then rises sharply for a few kilometers. Barnaby Lake is the first lake you encounter. Following the trail around the lake and a short climb brings you to Southfork Lakes - 2 lakes divided by a rock outcropping.
