The trail is definitely not easy,...although this year you might make it without wet feet.
Bear Lake itself is a hidden gem if you are after Smallmouth Bass!
Lovely challenging trail. As a beginner/intermediate hiker, I would give this trail a 3/5 for difficulty; there are a few steep, rocky spots, and lots of tree roots. The flies are more annoying than the mosquitos but it’s very marshy in some points so bug spray and proper hiking shoes are essential. I saw bear poop on the trail about a km in so make sure you have a bear bell and bear spray just in case!
The trail is very well marked and maintained. Bugs were not so bad when we were out there. Not much scenery to look at until you get to the end...
Arriving at the parking lot there were a swarm of black flies constantly hitting the windows; sounded like hail. Once I sprayed bug repellant got out and was ready for the trail. I run 2k and walk 4k everyday to prepare for hikes. This trail was amazing. It is about 5.8k both ways. Requires stamina and focus. The weather was hot and muggy. I was surprised when I reached the end I was out of breath and dripping with sweat. The rocks seem mysterious and the lake scene is breath taking. Glad I wore proper shoes. Tried to have a peaceful lunch, but the bugs were hungrier than me. Sprayed bug spray again after reaching the end of the peninsula. The bathroom is newer and clean.
A little swampy in areas which is to be expected in May. The view at the end of the hike is worth the walk.
