It was a great experience at the Peninsula Observation Deck (AKA POD). It looks out into the bay (which is a great view in its own right), but what makes this place really special is the Bayside Astronomy program. It’s a group of volunteers who get together to raise awareness about the preservation of dark skies and why it’s in so much danger!
The folks who run it are fabulous, very amicable, and very knowledgeable about our night skies. Will recommend to locals and tourists alike if you want to look at the night skies through some tremendous telescopes!
I did takeaway a few things for anyone reading. A TL;DR:
- don’t use LED lights on the blue end of the spectrum. Look for warm colours.
- our tiny existence among the stars is a truly humbling experience.
Serene atmosphere on a bright sunny Sunday. Crystal clean water with a stoney shore. Enjoy the view of water, harbour, light house. Few picnic benches with/out tree shade. Public washroom. Paid parking on the site.
Wish could have stayed there longer for the night sky 🌌 (they have Saturday evenings get togethers)
Lovely observation deck, def the best one that I’ve been. And I got to see the Milky Way. The deck is facing toward to east along the lake. Nice breeze at night :) and there are benches for guests to sit, bring a blanket if you cant stand cold.
Nice place to see the stars at night. Great group of individuals, able to see Saturn, Jupiter, and a lot more in the fancy telescopes on site. I really recommend this as it is free and the people are doing this out of their free time. Great activity for the family. Keep your lights in the car!!!
A wonderful opportunity to learn about the night sky. The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association runs it's Bayside Astronomy program from the deck on Fridays and Saturdays during the summer, with star tours, telescope viewing, and fascinating lectures, all for free.
