When the tide is low you can walk across the sand bank to the island. You need a permit to go on top of the island because it is a shore bird nesting site. You do not need a permit to explore the inter-tidal zone, which goes from shin-deep up to the highest level barnacles cover rocks. A great place for the adventurer, there are lots of creatures to discover in pools and under rocks. My group found sculpin, kelp crab, red rock crab, purple and red shore crab, sea cucumber, midshipmen, sea stars, and algae. The island is a national preserve, so please replace overturned rocks and leaving any creatures you find.
Went over at low tide and went around exploring the island. There was a wide variety of tidal life such as starfish, sea anenomies, and crabs. The view down East Sound is amazing and getting your feet a little wet on the way over is well worth it.
Dry path on low tide!
Amazing sights. I saw bird nests and enjoyed views of the town.
